Spoiler Alert:
On Wednesday I wrote “Words Crush Wednesday: A Lesson on Exploration,” and I challenged readers to identify an object that could be a treasure or not. So if you want to join the fun, please read that post first by clicking on the link above. 🙂
For everyone else here goes….
Dear Mystery Object,
By now, you are familiar with your status, so too am I. However, I think it’s important to address all of your potential and your disappointment. D and I found you sleeping in the creek. There you sat nuzzled between a thick of leaves and latent water. Perhaps it was your situation that gave your body luster. So D picked you up, and I stood in amazement as your parts were awed after–your body a rustic black and pasty crust of age possessed your exterior. Could you be a relic of the past? Truly I was amazed as well as she, and we both admired and wondered who abandoned you here in the deep forest.
Yet stories sometimes unfold, of a fool and her gold. And then your mystery became questionable; the hope for treasure soon sunk as a pirate’s hope turns sour. I noticed your opening; it possessed no smooth surface, but some sort of lining as though a piece might be missing, and epiphany exploded: alas, you were not a treasure, but a household plunger! A simple rubber suction cup, who has lost his handle and can no longer free plumbing traps and waste outlets of obstructions!
My you had us fooled like hunters of gold in the Old South West, we better identified with the old saying of “fool’s gold.” We felt such horror and disappointment! The germs that trampled through our unblemished hands! How could it be? No treasure?
But then came the chuckles, the giggles of two fools and tears for the unexpected joys in life. How could we have mistaken your identity? We were like two children who sat upon a bed of grass making the clouds into something they are not, but is that so bad?
So Mr. Plunger, back into the bed of leaves you go. And there you shall sit until you fool another. Yet, I should thank you for this treasured memory and your lesson: we can find joy in all things little, even when we experience the unexpected. In this case, the very unexpected! But all is forgiven, and I hope this has given our friends a nice chuckle. Best wishes for a beautiful New Year! May it be filled with many others who embrace the heart of an explorer and discover your hidden charms.
Your friend,

Very true! We should all make time for a walkabout, even if it’s a little one. 🙂

It was a treasure only for a short while, but the adventure will remain a treasure in our memories forever. Thank you for exploring in my imaginary Forrest with me and seeing the wealth of our friendship in enjoying the simple moments.

Thank you! We certainly had fun telling the story by the campfire that night, such fun in being fooled. I never thought to tag it as humor, but I should probably add that. I’m not sure if your father has interesting stories being a plumber, but I can imagine probably one or two. Maybe? Thank your for reading! Happy New Year! 🎈

He has so many interesting stories! And jokes also. We used to tell him to NOT tell certain plumber jokes to our boys…..or we would send him to school to deal with the teachers.

Thank you! I really appreciate that! How I introduced the odd piece was not planned until the morning of writing the letter. Funny what happens when we let our Muse take over. Thank you for visiting my blog!

Awesome way you led up to the item and had us wondering even more then our original guess. Nice joy here. A lesson for us is always remember to look and see the beauties that may be…

Yes…even if they are not what you hoped. Everything contains an ounce of possibility right? In any case, this one brought much laughter. 😉

LOL. Wasn’t it great the way Sharon led up to the question. I flushed it out right away, lol. I’ve used one or two of them in my life especially in my college days as a janitor. I have great respect for plumbers, lol.

I think I was fooled by the color. All of the plungers in my life have been a sort of reddish-brown. As for plumbers, they’ll always have a job. 🙂

Nice letter that inspired some interesting comments from thechickengrandma. I’d love to hear some of those stories (but probably not the ones she didn’t want shared with her kids – lol). Fun couple of posts – your muse was in rare form.
